Counseling ServicesLiana is a Registered Social Worker and Certified Play Therapist. She has specialized training in child psychotherapy and play therapy. Play Therapy refers to a large number of treatment methods, all of which make use of the natural benefits of play. Play Therapy differs from regular play in that the therapist helps children systematically address and resolve their problems. Therapists use play in therapy for many reasons. Play helps build a positive relationship between the therapist and the client. Play helps to engage the child in the therapy session. And, children can often communicate their difficulties more effectively through play than they can through traditional "talking therapy." Research supports the effectiveness of Play Therapy with children experiencing a variety of problems, including: divorce, bereavement, chronic illness, abuse, domestic violence, anxiety, depression, peer difficulties, aggression, and low self-esteem. Children are assessed and a unique treatment plan is created with an understanding that every child is different. Liana’s theoretical focus combines expressive therapies, particularly play therapy, with cognitive behavioral work and skills training. Children may be seen individually or in family therapy. Parents may receive training including how to provide positive discipline for children while managing troublesome behaviors.
